KMPDU strikes deal with Mombasa a day after announcing doctors’ strike
By Ndiritu Wanjiru, March 4, 2026The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has struck several deals with the Mombasa County government hours after announcing a doctors’ strike.
Taking it to his social media handle on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, KMPDU Secretary General Davji Atellah said the strike, which was set to begin on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, after a notice issued on February 24, 2026, was called off after intensive discussions led by Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sharif Nassir.
In the negotiations, the county government and KMPDU reached an agreement that addresses the key concerns of doctors.
“Following the strike notice issued on 24th February 2026, we have concluded intensive engagements with the county government of Mombasa, led by H.E. Abdulswamad Sharif Nassir,” Davji Atellah said.

KMPDU-Mombasa County deal
Under the deal, the Secretary General in his statement, has noted that all eligible medical personnel will receive promotions in a phased manner. Fifteen doctors in Group M will collect their letters immediately, while 33 doctors in Group N will be promoted on April 1, 2026. Group P doctors will be promoted in two batches of 39, on April 1, 2026, and July 1, 2026, while 17 doctors in Group Q will advance starting April 1, 2026, and four doctors in Group R will move up by July 1, 2026.

In addition, KMPDU has noted that 64 doctors currently on contract will be converted to permanent and pensionable positions effective June 1, 2026, ensuring long-term job security. KMPDU has further said that pending statutory deductions will also be cleared in full by September 1, 2026.
Interdiction of the County Health CEO
The agreement further guarantees that medical operations will remain free from political interference, and the interdiction of the county health CEO has been lifted, with the matter now proceeding through the Employment and Labour Relations Court (ELRC) to follow due legal process.
KMPDU Secretary General Davji Atellah hailed the resolution as a reflection of unity, consistency, and principled engagement and assured members that the union will closely monitor adherence to the agreed timelines.
With the strike called off, healthcare services in Mombasa are set to resume normal operations.
