KMPDU announces fresh wave of strikes in Kiambu County
The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists’ Union (KMPDU) has announced a fresh wave of protests in Kiambu to compel the county government to meet their demands.
In a statement on Thursday, August 14, 2025, KMPDU National Secretary-General Davji Atellah remarked that the new wave of strikes will begin in the coming week.
“Next week, we begin a series of demonstrations to amplify our call. Our strike is not just about salaries or promotions, it is about the right of every Kiambu resident to access quality, timely, and dignified healthcare,” Atellah said.
State of healthcare
The announcement comes after KMPDU officials met legislators from Kiambu County on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, to lay bare the state of healthcare, which has seen medics go on strike for months.

“Led by the Majority Leader of the National Assembly, we held a comprehensive meeting yesterday with MPs from Kiambu County to discuss the dire state of healthcare, which is now on the brink of total collapse,” Atellah said.
“We laid out the full picture: hospitals without essential medicines, overworked staff, neglected facilities, and expressed our deep frustrations with the County Government of Kiambu. We made it clear: urgent intervention is not optional; it is a matter of life and death.”
Doctors’ demands
He stated that while the doctors had held their end of the stick, the leadership of Kiambu County had let them down.

“Today marks Day 80 of the ongoing doctors’ strike in Kiambu. This is not a decision taken lightly. We have been patient, we have engaged in dialogue, and we have honored agreements in good faith. Yet the county leadership has chosen to ignore court orders, disregard the CBA, and gamble with the lives of Kiambu residents,” Atellah noted.
He equally indicated that the doctors would not resume their duties at the county until all of their grievances were addressed.
When dealing with rogue leadership, there is no standard formula. We remain on a protected strike, and we will not return to work until every single issue is addressed and an end to the victimization and intimidation of healthcare workers
We are not just fighting for ourselves; we are fighting for the future of healthcare in Kiambu and across Kenya.
