Kisumu buzzing with excitement ahead of Africa cultural event
DIVERSITY: Kisumu is buzzing with excitement as it prepares to host the 5th Edition Festival of African Arts and Culture (FESTAC) for the first time this year.
This is one of Africa’s biggest festivals and will celebrate the continent’s rich cultural diversity through cross-cultural exhibitions, trade, music, dance, fashion, arts, tourism marketing, and many more.
Robinson Anyal, chair of the Nyanza Hoteliers’ Association, confirmed that the hospitality sector is fully prepared to welcome the influx of visitors, explaining that hotels in Kisumu have ramped up their services and facilities to ensure a comfortable stay for all guests.
“Preparations are indeed in top gear and many hotels have recorded 60 per cent early bookings,’’ he said.
Rich cultural heritage
The FESTAC Africa Festival, also known as the Festival of Black and African Arts and Culture, is a grand celebration of Africa’s rich cultural heritage.
The festival promises to be a vibrant showcase of diverse African cultures through various forms of art, including African music, dance, fashion, literature, and more. The event in Lakeside city will take place from August 25 to September 1, 2024, at the Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium.
Kisumu County Minister for Trade and Tourism, Farida Salim, told the Business Hub that the FESTAC aims to boost the local economy through increased tourism, trade, and investment opportunities.
“The community is actively involved, ensuring the event is inclusive and engaging,’’ she said. The theme for this year is “Sustainable Growth Trajectory for Africa through Culture, Trade, Travel and Tourism.”
She said attendees look forward to seven days of vibrant performances, networking opportunities, and cultural exhibitions. “The festival will not only celebrate African culture but also aims to boost local economies by promoting tourism, trade, and investment,’’ said Salim.
There will be workshops and seminars on the sidelines which will have sessions on topics like sustainable development, cultural preservation, and the role of arts in society.
Trade fairs will also provide an opportunity for businesses to showcase their products and services, promoting trade and investment. It’s a fantastic opportunity for visitors to experience the rich cultural tapestry of Africa and engage with like-minded individuals from around the world.
According to Yinka Abioye, the chairperson of FESTAC Africa, they chose Kisumu because of its vibrant cultural scene, and proximity to neighbouring East African countries.
Some of the planned impact programs include health screening, tree planting, and workshops focused on enhancing mental wellness. “We are determined to elevate the arts and culture sector, urging policymakers to recognize its economic potential and treat it with the respect it deserves,’’ said Abioye.
Opposition leader Raila Odinga will be the chief guest at the event, while Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong’o will be the host and also one of the keynote speakers.
