Kindiki issues update on stalled roads in Trans Nzoia County
By Cynthia Lodite, March 24, 2026Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has announced the government’s move to settle all pending bills in the road sector, paving the way for the resumption of construction works in various parts of the country, including Trans Nzoia County.
In a post on his official X account on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, Kindiki announced that the pending bills amounted to at least Ksh177 billion.
According to the second in command, the bills settled will hence pave the way for construction works on some 6,000 kilometres of roads that stalled five to six years ago, and the commencement of new road projects across Kenya.
“The government has paid all pending bills in the road sector, totalling 177 billion shillings, paving the way for the resumption of construction works on some 6,000 kilometres of roads that stalled five to six years ago and the commencement of new road projects across Kenya,” Kindiki said.
In addition, Kindiki explained that in Trans Nzoia County, road construction projects worth Ksh38 billion shillings are underway at various stages.
The projects in Trans Nzoia are expected to include the upgrading to bitumen standards of some 326 kilometres of roads.

“Inspected ongoing construction works on the 73-kilometre Kitale/Artukan-Maili Saba-Kesogon-Chepareria-Murpus Road to cost 15.4 billion shillings,” he added.

Upgrading SGR
Kindiki’s remarks come days after he lauded the government’s effort to extend the Standard Gauge Railway beyond Naivasha to Kisumu, Malaba and into Uganda.
According to Kindiki, extension of the SGR will help Kenya achieve its ambition of joining a first-world economic status.
“Extension of the Standard Gauge Railway is a key milestone in the journey of Kenya’s aspiration to join first-world economic status within a single generation, as Singapore, Malaysia, Korea, and China did,” the DP said on Saturday, March 21, 2026, through a social media post.
“A modern railway system, seaports, airports and road networks are key trade and investment enablers with the potential of accelerating the development of Kenya into a globally competitive market economy,” he added.
“Transforming Kenya, one step at a time.”
President William Ruto and his Ugandan counterpart, Yoweri Museveni, launched the Naivasha-Narok-Bomet-Kisumu-Malaba railway extension on Saturday.
