An Assistant Chief in Gatundu South, Kiambu county, who was under investigation for multiple claims of sexually assaulting underage boys, died by suicide yesterday inside his house at Kamunyu village.

The body of Kamuiru Ndumba was discovered hanging from a lesso in one of the rooms of his residence after missing in public for weeks when sleuths were hunting him.

The deceased had recently come under public and police scrutiny following accusations from several families in the community.

The allegations of sodomy and abuse of power with some alleged male victims as young as 17 years old.

Community members had begun demanding his immediate suspension and arrest.

Shock and mixed emotions gripped the community as news of the chief’s death spread, with only a handful of residents expressing sorrow, while others voiced frustration over what they described as a denial of justice for the alleged victims.

The assistant chief is said to have perpetrated the heinous crime on April 20, 2025, within Kamunyu village where he was born, raised, and represents in the area’s local administration.

He fled the village after he heard that irate villagers were hunting him down to lynch him.

One of the victims said the administrator forced him to drink muratina (a local brew) before molesting him after he was intoxicated.

The victim, who spoke to journalists at their home, said he had delivered milk to the administrator’s home in the company of his two other friends. They found the chief asleep, but he was woken up by his wife.

He then led them to a house within his homestead where he offered them liquor.

The friends left for a nearby homestead where they had been nursing a newly-circumcised colleague while he drank the brew.

He was then intoxicated and regained consciousness while at his house.

He says he realised all was not well when he went to answer a call of nature. His stool was bloody. He alerted his grandmother whom he lives with.

The victim was rushed to the hospital, where it was established he had been molested and placed on medication.

The matter was reported at Gatundu Police Station under OB No.04/24/04/25.

On the fateful night, the administrator, in his quest to quench his immoral thirst, pursued the two other boys in the neighbouring homestead.

He then trailed the second victim to his home, where he demanded to know whether he was already circumcised.

The boy agreed to the administrator’s demands and pulled down his trousers.

He told journalists that the assistant chief started fondling his private parts and demanded that he lie on the bed on his stomach. He declined and instead pushed the administrator aside and vanished into darkness.

“He knocked on my door and I opened it because he is a senior person in the village. He demanded to ascertain that I have undergone the rite of passage. I unzipped my trousers and showed him. He then demanded that I pull my trousers down further and lie on my stomach. I declined and told him I can’t do such an evil deed. I pushed him and escaped,” he said.

The second victim has also recorded statements with the authorities.

Gatundu South Assistant County Commissioner Rose Chege, while confirming the death by suicide incident, said that the administrator was on police trail before he died.

She said that the victims have already received their reports, adding that the area security committee has already held a meeting with Kamunyu village locals over the matter.

“We have all the records and even medical examination records of the victims,” Chege stated.

She also accused Kamunyu village residents of failing to report such incidents on time, noting that the notorious assistant chief has been perpetrating similar crimes but gets away with them after bribing the victims and their families.

“We’ve gathered information that the suspect had been perpetrating these crimes and covering them by bribing victims and their parents. The parents and the community have failed for not bringing such information to the authorities,” Chege said.

His body was taken to the Kenyatta University Funeral Home as investigations into the matter continue.
