With the interviews for the next chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) over, focus has now shifted to the hiring of commissioners.

For many Kenyans, an independent IEBC is not just about ensuring free elections, but also about safeguarding democracy.

Kenyans have seen the consequences of political interference in IEBC affairs: a fractured society, disenfranchised voters, and elections that sow division rather than unity.

The fear that a compromised commission could once again lead to unrest or violence is real, and the desire for a neutral and transparent body to oversee elections is more urgent than ever as evidenced in a Vox Pox conducted by PD Wikendi.

Those interviewed envision an IEBC that operates with the highest levels of professionalism and integrity, where election management is transparent, open to scrutiny, and above reproach.

They want an institution that is not just independent by name, but in practice—one that can stand strong against political pressure and ensure every vote counts.

This dream of an independent IEBC is not just about elections but also about fostering trust in the democratic process, ensuring that power remains in the hands of the people, and upholding the values of justice and equality.

As observed from the interviews, one of the biggest challenges, remains the public’s trust in the system.

After years of political manipulation, Kenyans want to see more than just reforms on paper. They want to see a culture of transparency, accountability and fairness.

They want an IEBC that is not beholden to any political party but is instead committed to representing the will of the people, regardless of political allegiance.

Throughout Kenya’s history, elections have often been marred by allegations of rigging, voter manipulation and fraud. Political parties have frequently sought to control the commission.
