Kenya Power rushes to repair flooded South C substation after Nairobi blackout
Heavy rains that struck Nairobi on Friday night, March 6, 2026, flooded a key electricity facility in South C, leaving several neighbourhoods across the city without power.
Kenya Power confirmed the disruption in a customer alert issued on Saturday, March 7, 2026. The utility said floodwater entered the South C substation after part of the boundary wall collapsed, damaging electrical equipment and interrupting supply.
The outage affected several areas, including South B, South C, Nairobi West, Madaraka Estate, Strathmore, Dam Estate, Lang’ata, Wilson Airport, Carnivore, Kenyatta Market, Ngumo Estate, Industrial Area, Uhuru Gardens and surrounding neighbourhoods.
“Kenya Power extends its deepest sympathies to all the families and communities affected by the floods that swept across Nairobi and its environs on Friday night,” the company said in its alert.
Engineers arrived at the site soon after the flooding. Teams began assessing the damage, running tests and carrying out repairs on the affected equipment.
“Our engineers are already on site, carefully assessing the damage to electrical equipment and working tirelessly to carry out the necessary tests and repairs,” Kenya Power explained. “Where possible, we are switching some customers to adjacent substations to ease the impact.”
The utility also shared updates on X, showing the extent of the flooding at the facility.
“Scenes from Nairobi’s South C Substation this morning after last night’s flooding. Our engineers are on site assessing equipment and working to restore supply,” one post read.

Kenya Power urges patience
The company apologised to customers for the interruption.
“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused and thank you for your patience and understanding,” the alert added.
Residents in the affected areas continued to face blackouts on Saturday as repair teams worked to restore electricity.
Kenya Power urged customers to report any electricity problems through its official channels. The company said people could dial *977# to report faults. Customers can also contact the utility through its website, WhatsApp channel and social media pages on X and Facebook.
The flooding followed a night of heavy rainfall that caused flash floods in several low-lying parts of Nairobi. Roads in some areas became difficult to pass through as stormwater built up quickly.
This comes as the death toll after the Nairobi flooding hit 23, according to the latest statement from the National Police Service.
