Kenya Met warns of heavier rains from Thursday in five regions
The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned that rainfall will intensify from Thursday, March 19, 2026, across several parts of the country as the long rains season begins to strengthen.
In its weekly weather forecast for March 17 to March 23, 2026, released on Monday, March 16, 2026,the department said rains will continue in many regions, with heavier downpours expected later in the week.
“The Kenya Meteorological Department forecasts continued rainfall over several parts of the country, with intensity expected to increase from Thursday,” the department said in an update shared on X.
Heavier rainfall
According to the forecast, the rainfall will mainly affect five regions across the country. These include the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the South-eastern Lowlands and the Coastal region.
The department warned that isolated heavy rainfall events may occur in some areas within these regions.
Such conditions could increase the risk of flash floods in low-lying areas and landslides in hilly terrain. Transport disruptions and temporary flooding in urban centres may also occur if drainage systems are overwhelmed.
The forecast comes as the country gradually transitions into the March–May long rains season, which typically brings widespread rainfall across many regions.
Sunny and dry conditions
While rainfall is expected in many parts of the country, the department said some areas will remain mostly sunny and dry during the forecast period.
Parts of North-eastern and North-western Kenya are expected to experience largely dry conditions, although occasional light showers may occur in isolated areas.

Temperature variations are also expected across the country. Daytime temperatures in coastal areas, as well as North-eastern and North-western Kenya, are likely to rise above 30°C.
Meanwhile, cooler night temperatures are expected in several highland areas. Minimum temperatures could fall below 10°C in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, parts of the Central Rift Valley, sections of the North Rift and areas near Mt. Kilimanjaro.
“Temperature Outlook, Daytime temperatures above 30°C expected in several areas, including the Coast, North-eastern and North-western Kenya. Night-time temperatures below 10°C are likely in parts of:, Highlands East of the Rift Valley, Central Rift Valley, Parts of the North Rift, Areas near Mt. Kilimanjaro.”
Remain alert
The Kenya Met has advised residents in areas likely to receive heavy rainfall to remain alert and monitor updates from official channels.
Residents have been urged to avoid flood-prone areas and ensure drainage channels around homes and businesses remain clear to reduce the risk of flooding.
Farmers in rainfall areas may benefit from the increased moisture for planting, although excessive rainfall could also damage crops or delay farm activities in some locations.
The department continues to encourage the public to stay updated through its official platforms as weather conditions may change during the forecast period.
