Kenya and Ethiopia have strengthened their long-standing relationship by signing a Defence Cooperation Agreement aimed at boosting security and stability in the Horn of Africa.

The agreement was signed in Addis Ababa at the Ministry of Defence Headquarters by the Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF), General Charles Kahariri, and the Chief of the Ethiopian National Defence Forces, Field Marshall Birhanu Jula. This is according to a statement posted by the Kenya Defence Forces on their official X account on Thursday, September 25, 2025.

The pact sets out a structured framework for closer collaboration between the two countries, targeting today’s growing security challenges. It also lays emphasis on joint training, interoperability, and building systems for quicker intelligence sharing.

Strengthening defence ties

General Kahariri noted that the deal represents more than just a military handshake. He said the partnership is an investment in modern technology, stronger infrastructure, and greater industrial capacity for both nations.

“This is a clear expression of African self-reliance; mastering our collective fate through cooperation, ingenuity, and shared action,” General Kahariri stated.

His remarks underscored Kenya’s focus on practical solutions that not only boost security but also prepare the region to stand on its own feet in addressing complex threats.

Long-standing relationship

Field Marshall Jula echoed the same message, reaffirming Ethiopia’s commitment to working hand-in-hand with Kenya. He described the agreement as a natural continuation of the two countries’ close ties, bonds forged through shared borders, history, and common challenges.

He expressed optimism that the cooperation will not only enhance peace and security in both countries but also help stabilise and bring prosperity to the broader region.

“This agreement reflects the long-standing relationship between the two nations, rooted in shared borders, history, and common challenges,” Jula said, adding that the pact would play a vital role in promoting stability and prosperity.

The Kenya–Ethiopia Defence Cooperation Agreement is now seen as a major step toward a more united and self-reliant Africa, with both countries committing to walk the path together.
