Kanja pushes for increased police funding ahead of 2027 polls
The National Police Service (NPS) has presented its FY 2026/2027 budget estimates to Parliament, with Inspector General Douglas Kanja calling for enhanced logistical support ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The presentation was made before the Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Security on Tuesday, May 2026.
Led by IG Kanja, the NPS delegation told lawmakers that sufficient funding is required to strengthen security operations and ensure preparedness for the electoral period.
The service noted that the 2027 General Election will require extensive logistical arrangements, including deployment of officers, communication systems, transport logistics and coordination across all 47 counties.
“Next year is a General Election year and with it comes the need for enhanced logistical support to ensure the delivery of a credible exercise,” Kanja said during the session.
He urged Parliament to support increased budgetary allocations to enable the police to fully carry out their constitutional mandate.
The NPS said priority areas include ongoing security operations in volatile regions, recruitment of additional officers to address staffing gaps, and upgrading of police stations and related infrastructure to improve service delivery.
Security priorities and institutional reforms
The police service highlighted the need to modernise its systems to respond to emerging threats such as terrorism, banditry, cybercrime and election-related violence. The proposed investments are expected to improve response times, operational efficiency and overall service delivery.

The IG reiterated the vision of transforming the NPS into a modern, professional and people-centred institution. He noted that strengthening infrastructure and increasing personnel capacity remain key components of ongoing reforms within the service.
The delegation also included NPS Secretary Administration and Accounting Officer Bernice Lemedeket, Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service Eliud Lagat, Director of Criminal Investigations Mohamed Amin, and other senior officers.
Parliamentary engagement and national security context
The budget estimates come at a time when national attention is increasingly focused on election preparedness and security planning. Lawmakers are expected to review the proposals as part of broader discussions ahead of the Finance Bill and national budget approval process.
The NPS presentation emphasised the importance of sustained investment in security institutions to ensure stability during the electoral period.
The service said adequate resources will be critical in maintaining law and order before, during and after the 2027 polls across the country.
