Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka is pushing for June 25 to be recognised as Gen-Z Revolution Day to remember those who firmly rejected tax-raising measures that were contained in the Finance Bill 2024.

In a statement on Saturday, June 21, 2025, the opposition leader indicated that the day should be considered sacred as young people took to the streets weaponless and made their voices heard.

While justifying his push for the day to be recognised as Gen-Z Revolution Day, Kalonzo dismissed sentiments that he was advocating for it for his political interests, but insisted it was the right thing to do for those who lost their lives in that course.

“On June 25th, Kenya will pause to honour our fallen heroes — the young patriots who paid the ultimate price for our democracy.
This must become Gen Z Revolution Day — a sacred day when we remember those who stood weaponless against tyranny and gave everything for the Kenya they believed in,” Kalonzo’s statement read in part.

“Months ago, I called for this day to be recognised — not for political mileage, not for attention — but because it is the right thing to do. These young Kenyans died for principles bigger than any of us,” he justified his push.

Earlier, Kalonzo had declared that June 25, 2025, would be a national holiday.

“June 25, we mark it as a Gen Z revolution day. It will be a holiday for Kenyans to celebrate the new freedom brought to them by Gen Z. June 25 will forever be a national holiday,” Kalonzo declared.

June 25, 2024

Events of June 25, 2024, marked a turning point in Kenya’s politics after anti-government protesters, led by the young Gen Z generation, escalated into violent confrontations following the passage of the Finance Bill 2024, which proposed significant tax hikes on essential goods and services.

The nationwide revolt culminated in the storming of Parliament in Nairobi, where protesters set a section of the building on fire.

Police responded with brute force, resulting in the deaths of several protesters and the injury of dozens of others.

Later, President William Ruto came out and labelled those who stormed Parliament as treasonous. After consultations, he, however, dropped the contentious Finance Bill 2024.

Kalonzo’s appeal to Kenyans

As the day fast approaches, Kalonzo asked Kenyans to honour those who lost their lives by paying tributes and laying flowers in their remembrance.

“I urge all Kenyans to join this solemn tribute. Come out and lay flowers for our young patriots who paid the ultimate price for a better Kenya,” Kalonzo stated.

“Their sacrifice must never be forgotten or diminished. Their blood must not be in vain.”
