Kalonzo issues demands to Ruto over abductions
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka on Monday, December 30, 2024, continued to pile pressure on President William Ruto’s administration over the recent spate of abductions reported in the country.
Accompanied by other opposition leaders, the former vice president pointed an accusing finger at the government of the day, maintaining that it should be held responsible for the cases of enforced disappearance.
Addressing the media at SKM Command Centre, Nairobi, Kalonzo compared the reported cases of abductions to Adolf Hitler Nazi militias.
He lamented that despite uproar from Kenyans, the relevant authorities had failed to bring to book masked individuals who he claimed were behind the abductions.
Kalonzo thus demanded the immediate release of all the abducted individuals in the country. He further implored the government to ensure that they are united with their families safely after their release.
The Wiper Party leader claimed that 29 individuals have still not been accounted for since the mass anti-finance Bill 2024 protests.
Kalonzo challenged the government to issue a full report on what transpired and the whereabouts of the said individuals.
“We the People’s Loyal Opposition demand that all 82 youth who have been abducted in the last three months be released and returned to their families immediately,” Kalonzo’s statement read in part.
“We also demand that all the 29 missing youth whose whereabouts are unaccounted for be accounted for, forthwith,” it added.
At the same time, Kalonzo blasted Ruto’s government claiming that they had sponsored hashtags on social media to push for their agenda instead of addressing the issue of abductions.
He asked the state to re-direct their efforts towards addressing pertinent issues bedevilling the country.
Abduction protests
Kalonzo’s statement came in the wake of protests staged in different parts of the country calling for the end of abductions.
In Nairobi, Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah led a group of people to demonstrate along Aga Khan Walk in the Central Business District (CBD). Omtatah chained himself alongside other protesters demanding the release of the missing persons.
Law enforcement officers were, however, recorded patrolling different sections of the city to try and contain the demos.
Protests were also staged in Mombasa where residents marched on the streets holding placards asking the state to help stop abductions in the country.
During a recent visit to Homa Bay County, Ruto promised to put an end to abductions. He however expressed disappointment with what he termed a negative and raging trend of social media jibes directed at him and other prominent leaders and urged parents to bring up their children in the right way by inculcating moral values in them to avoid sliding into deviance.
