Former Attorney General Justin Muturi has called on African political parties to strengthen cooperation across national borders to amplify the continent’s collective voice in global affairs.

Taking to X, on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, after speaking at the 2025 Democracy Union of Africa (DUA) Forum, themed “Looking Ahead: A Vision for a Balanced Future,” Muturi said Africa must rise above individual national interests and work together on shared challenges.

He emphasised that unity – not uniformity – should guide African politics, noting that cross-border collaboration would help parties harmonise policies, share democratic experiences, and negotiate from a stronger position when engaging with partners such as Europe.

Muturi proposed the creation of a Permanent Africa–Europe Dialogue Platform to align governance, trade, and security priorities between the two continents. He said such a platform would help Africa set clear, common positions during discussions with European leaders.

He also called for the establishment of a DUA Policy Institute to provide research-based African perspectives on trade justice, digital transformation, and sustainable investment. The institute, he said, would help shape Africa’s approach to international policy using home-grown knowledge.

Calls for unified leadership

To strengthen Africa’s influence in negotiations with the European Union, Muturi urged the formation of a Pan-African Negotiation Framework to ensure consistency between regional and continental positions ahead of key summits.

He further highlighted the need to deepen regional integration by promoting political cooperation across existing blocs such as ECOWAS, the East African Community (EAC), the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and COMESA. According to Muturi, closer coordination within these bodies would help African nations present a unified stance on trade and security matters.

Muturi also stressed the importance of empowering youth and women to play active roles in policymaking and leadership, both at national and continental levels. He said the future of Africa’s governance depends on inclusive participation and the nurturing of young leaders.

He concluded by urging all African political actors to embrace mutual respect, transparency, sustainability, and sovereignty as the guiding principles for Africa–Europe relations.

“Our ultimate goal,” Muturi said, “is to ensure that when Africa speaks, it speaks as one clear, confident, and united.”
