Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi has dismissed claims of divisions within the opposition, insisting that the United Alternative Government remains united by a common purpose despite differing opinions among its leaders.

In a statement shared via his official X account on the night of Monday, June 29, 2026, the former Attorney General said the opposition coalition embraces internal debate as a source of strength rather than a sign of weakness, taking an apparent swipe at critics who have questioned the alliance’s cohesion.

“We are united in the United Alternative Government, not by forcing everyone to think the same, but by a shared mission to serve the people and correct the failures of governance where they exist,” Muturi stated.

“We embrace open debate and differing opinions because that is what strengthens us, unlike those who confuse control with unity. But while our voices may differ in expression, we remain firm, disciplined, and aligned in purpose, committed to offering the country a principled and people-centered alternative.”

Muturi’s remarks come amid heightened scrutiny of the opposition coalition, which has recently faced persistent speculation over internal disagreements as its principals intensify preparations for the 2027 General Election.

A coalition positioning itself as a government-in-waiting

The United Alternative Government, also referred to by its leaders as the United Opposition, brings together several prominent opposition figures, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Democratic Action Party-Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa, Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, among others. The alliance has presented itself as a government-in-waiting seeking to unseat President William Ruto in the 2027 elections.

Since its formation, the coalition has coordinated nationwide political rallies, church engagements and policy announcements while mounting sustained criticism of the Kenya Kwanza administration over the cost of living, fuel prices, taxation, governance and electoral reforms.

The alliance has also unveiled what it describes as a “People’s Budget”, opposed the Finance Bill 2026, criticised the government’s handling of the economy and demanded reforms at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) ahead of the next General Election.

Responding to claims of disunity

Muturi’s statement appears aimed at countering repeated claims that differing public positions taken by opposition principals point to cracks within the coalition.

In recent weeks, leaders of the alliance have insisted that disagreements over tactics or messaging should not be mistaken for a lack of unity, maintaining that diversity of opinion is expected within a broad political movement. Opposition leaders have also alleged that political opponents are attempting to exploit perceived differences to weaken the coalition ahead of 2027.

The former National Assembly Speaker argued that the coalition’s defining characteristic is its shared commitment to governance reforms rather than uniformity of thought.

His comments reinforce the opposition’s message that it intends to provide Kenyans with what it describes as “a principled and people-centred alternative” to the current administration.

Even as questions persist about who will ultimately carry the coalition’s presidential flag in 2027, the alliance has repeatedly maintained its commitment to fielding a single candidate against President William Ruto.

Coalition leaders have previously indicated that consensus-building and unity, rather than individual ambition, will guide that decision.
