The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced that more than 2.3 million new voters were registered during the just concluded 30-day Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration (ECVR) Phase I exercise, marking a major step in preparations for the 2027 General Election.

In a statement shared on X on Thursday, April 30, 2026, IEBC said the exercise, which ran from March 30 to April 28, 2026, was conducted across the country under the leadership of IEBC Chairperson Erasmus Ethung Ethekon and focused on increasing voter enrolment, especially among young people and first-time voters.

For many Kenyans approaching the next election cycle, voter registration remains the first and most important step in participating in national leadership decisions, making the latest figures significant for both the commission and political players.

IEBC said the exercise was designed to improve access, strengthen inclusivity, and ensure more citizens were able to register easily within their wards, constituencies, Huduma Centres, and institutions of higher learning.

The commission revealed that 2,345,476 new voters were added during the one-month exercise, pushing the total number of newly registered voters to 2,612,725 since continuous voter registration resumed in September 2025.

IEBC noted that the programme was supported by 30,615 registration centres, 12,520 trained registration officials, and the use of 5,390 KIEMS kits deployed across the country to support smooth operations.

The exercise covered all 290 constituencies, 1,450 wards, 57 Huduma Centres, universities, colleges, and the IEBC Customer Experience Centre at Anniversary Towers in Nairobi.

“ey highlights include the registration of 2,345,476 new voters during ECVR Phase I, bringing the total number of new voters to 2,612,725 since the resumption of Continuous Voter Registration in September 2025. ECVR was supported by the operationalization of 30,615 registration centres, deployment of 12,520 trained registration officials, and utilization of 5,390 KIEMS kits nationwide.

The exercise achieved full national coverage, spanning all 290 constituencies, 1,450 wards, 57 Huduma Centres, institutions of higher learning, and the IEBC Customer Experience Centre at Anniversary Towers, Nairobi,” the statement reads.

This wide coverage helped improve turnout and gave more citizens easier access to registration services without being forced to travel long distances to constituency offices.

The commission also said performance improved steadily after the first week, with weekly registration numbers rising above 500,000, showing stronger public response and better coordination than previous large-scale registration drives.

IEBC said the success of the exercise reflects growing public awareness of the importance of participating in elections and taking personal responsibility in shaping the country’s future through the ballot.

The commission thanked Kenyans, local administrators, security teams, registration officials and all stakeholders who supported the month-long exercise and helped ensure smooth operations in different parts of the country.

“On behalf of the Commission, I extend our deepest gratitude to every Kenyan and all stakeholders whose dedication, resilience and unwavering commitment made the ECVR Phase I exercise a success your collective effort has not only strengthened our democracy today but firmly laid the foundation for a more inclusive, credible, and participatory 2027 General Election,” he said.

The commission maintained that the registration exercise has significantly strengthened Kenya’s electoral preparedness and expanded the national voter base ahead of the next polls.
