At least Sh600 million allocated for various development projects at Kenyatta University from 2015 cannot be accounted for, the National Assembly’s Public Investments Committee (PIC) has revealed.

The public funds allocated to undertake various projects at the national facility among them a multi-million shilling children’s hospital, recreational centre, economic studies block among others are reported to have been misappropriated as the projects did not take off.

According to Jack Wamboka, the committee chairperson, the 12 projects stalled despite money having been allocated.

Speaking during a committee members site inspection at Kenyatta University, and the Kenyatta University Teaching, Research and Referral Hospital (KUTRRH) yesterday, Wamboka (Bumula) revealed the KU management had been summoned to Parliament to shed light on whereabouts of the money.

Among those who have been summoned to also clear the air on how KUTRRH was delinked from the university are Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u and former Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua.

He said projects that had been allocated Sh200 million were non-existent.
“We examined books of Kenyatta University and found issues that were not resolved. We decided to come on the ground and see for ourselves. Some projects were started here and did not go beyond foundation,” said Wamboka.

The committee also took issue with KUTRRH management for allegedly locking out KU students from accessing the hospital’s facilities for teaching and training purposes.

The two public institutions have been embroiled into a two-year battle over ownership of the hospital.
Kenyatta University Vice Chancellor Paul Wainaina and his former boss, now chairing the board of KUTRRH, Olive Mugenda, are embroiled in a management dispute.
