Herman Manyora: Why low voter registration turnout should be blamed on opposition
By Mabonga Makhanu, October 7, 2025Seasoned political analyst Herman Manyora has stated that the low voter registration turnout should be blamed on the opposition’s lack of new ideas.
While speaking during an interview on his YouTube channel on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, the analyst argued that if the United Opposition had better ideas for bringing change to the country, it could have inspired young people who have consistently demanded change to camp in voter registration centres.

According to Manyora, this would have made the youth view the opposition as a better alternative, motivating them to queue at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) offices to register as new voters.

“I blame the opposition more than I blame the government. Why the opposition? What are they doing about involving young people? What have they done? Is there anything they are doing? They can’t bring any change. None of these political leaders seeking to remove Ruto, even if they go to State House now, will change anything,” Manyora said.
He further stated that had the opposition identified and acted on this gap, even the IEBC’s target of 6.3 million new voters could have been surpassed if the opposition had played its role effectively.
Where are the young people
Manyora added that the main reason Gen Zs are not registering is that things do not make sense to them anymore, and there is no better political alternative.
He noted that young people are tired of the same old, recycled politicians who bring little or no change, and that is why they are not turning up to vote.
“So the question is, what is the opposition doing? They are now telling the world that even if they took over, they would not bring any change. They don’t have new ideas. Those ideas should be visible in the excitement and interest during voter registration. So the young people will do things their own way.”
“They have no ideas; they are bankrupt of ideas. They can’t bring change. If they doubt me, they should demonstrate it. If they had new ideas, there would be such long queues that the IEBC would rush to Parliament for emergency funds to handle the overwhelming registration numbers. But they didn’t, even though continuous voter registration is something they should have been doing all along.” He added
Voter registration
This comes during the second week of the national mass voter registration exercise, which has so far recorded low turnout.
In the first week alone, some counties, such as Trans Nzoia, registered only 71 new voters, including just four from Kwanza Constituency.

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary and 2027 presidential hopeful Fred Matiang’i, while speaking in Nakuru recently, stated that his Jubilee Party will assist the IEBC in mobilising young Kenyans to register as voters.
