The Government of Kenya has rolled out a nationwide maize seed subsidy programme following a presidential directive aimed at lowering production costs for farmers and boosting food security. The government has allocated Ksh2 billion to Kenya Seed Company Ltd to implement the subsidy programme.

In a statement from the Office of the Government Spokesperson, the initiative is expected to significantly improve access to certified maize seed ahead of the 2025/2026 planting season. The funding is intended to cushion farmers from rising input costs while ensuring the availability of high-quality seed varieties across the country.

“Subsidised Maize Seed Prices Take Effect Nationwide. This intervention forms part of broader efforts to enhance agricultural productivity and support millions of Kenyan farmers who rely on maize as a staple crop.

“Kenya Seed Company Ltd has been directed to immediately reduce maize seed prices for the 2025/2026 season, a move set to improve access for farmers and strengthen food security across the country,” the statement added.

Revised maize seed prices

According to the directive, Kenya Seed Company Ltd has been instructed to immediately reduce maize seed prices for the 2025/2026 planting season. With the new prices, a 1 kg packet will cost Ksh 260 and a 2 kg packet will cost Ksh 525. Farmers purchasing larger quantities will benefit from further subsidies, with 10 kg packs priced at Ksh2,625 and 25 kg packs retailing at Ksh6,560. The revised prices are expected to make certified seeds significantly more affordable, particularly for smallholder farmers.

The government noted that the price reduction is aimed at encouraging the adoption of high-quality seed varieties that offer better yields and improved resistance to pests and diseases. Increased uptake of certified seeds is expected to boost overall maize production and strengthen national food reserves.

The subsidy programme aligns with the government’s broader strategy to achieve food security and reduce reliance on imports. By lowering the cost of key farm inputs, officials say the initiative will not only enhance productivity but also stabilise maize supply and market prices.

Farmers across the country have welcomed the move, expressing optimism that the reduced seed prices will ease their financial burden and improve returns during the upcoming planting season.
