The problems bedeviling Gor Mahia seems to have worsened after the club captain Haroun Shakava decamped to newly promoted Kenyan Premier League side Kenya Police. Following the development, Gor have since handed youthful national team defender Philemon Otieno the captain’s arm band.

Shakava’s departure is certainly a big blow to Gor as they will be left with no option assuming that two of the other central defenders in Boniface Onyango and Dennis Ng’ang’a sustain injuries.

The change of allegiance by Shakava is least shocking to Gor’s faithful considering that the management had earlier hinted at taking drastic action to a section of players who were deemed rebellious to the operations of the management.

According to independent sources within Gor, the bone of contention was the unpaid perks to players amidst open revelation by the team’s top hierarchy that the financial security of the 19-time Kenyan champions is not guaranteed.

Other reports indicated that while senior players were least afraid to complain over alleged apathy directed to them in matters of wage payment,  the management was willing to bite the bullet by giving marching orders to those who have been found culpable of inciting their colleagues’ to boycott training sessions over unpaid allowances.

The situation came to a head when Gor was humiliated 3-0 by Posta Rangers in a league match on January 26 with the team’s faithful taking into social media calling on the resignation of the Head Coach Mark Harrison who has since been sacked and has been replaced by German Andreas Spier.
