Fatal road accident claims lives at Pap Onditi, Kendu Bay

A tragic road accident at Pap Onditi has occurred along the Katito-Kendu Bay Road, leaving multiple people dead and several others injured. The incident involved multiple vehicles and has shocked residents in the area.

Governor of Homa Bay County, Gladys Nyasuna Wanga, confirmed the accident and expressed her deep sorrow. She extended condolences to the families, relatives, and friends of those who lost their lives.

“Our thoughts and prayers are also with the injured, and we wish them a quick and full recovery,” she said in an official statement on Thursday, January 1, 2026.

“The county government is working closely with the Kisumu County Government, emergency response teams, health facilities, and security agencies to ensure that all injured persons receive proper medical care,” the statement added.

Governor Wanga lauded first responders and members of the public who helped at the scene.

She urged motorists to exercise caution, obey traffic rules, and remain vigilant, especially during busy periods.

“Road safety is a shared responsibility, and preventable accidents continue to claim precious lives,” she said.

Details of the crash are still emerging, but reports indicate that multiple vehicles collided, leading to severe injuries and fatalities. Local authorities have set up a team to assist affected families and coordinate emergency services.

Hospitals in the region have also been put on alert to receive and treat the injured.

Residents have expressed concern over road safety in the area. Drivers have been urged to reduce speed, avoid fatigue, and remain alert while on the road to prevent further tragedies.

Kenya urged road safety

The tragedy comes as Kenya begins the new year, reminding all road users of the importance of vigilance and responsible driving. The Homa Bay County Government has assured the public that support will be provided to affected families and victims.

In a separate incident, Hot 96 radio presenter Nick Odhiambo was involved in a car accident on New Year’s Eve. The crash caused major damage to his vehicle, but Odhiambo escaped unharmed.

He later admitted on social media that fatigue had contributed to the crash and expressed relief that the outcome was not worse. Odhiambo reassured his fans and family, emphasising the importance of safe driving.
