Former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) president Eric Theuri says the parliament has surrendered its responsibility to citizens.

Speaking during an interview on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, Theuri expressed discontent in the country’s leadership saying it was headed in the wrong direction.

He explained that the Members of Parliament (MPs) had left the citizens to take over their roles.

“The country appears to be headed in the wrong direction and parliament has abdicated its responsibility to the Kenyan people,” he said.

Theuri was responding to remarks about MPs focusing on Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment instead of important issues affecting the country.

The DP’s impeachment motion was approved after 291 MPs appended their signatures to ouster him.

Speaking on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, Wetang’ula noted that the motion met all requirements to be read on the house floor.

“I find that the proposed special motion by Hon. Eckomas Mutuse meets the requirement of Articles 145(1) and 150(1)(b) of the Constitution and Standing Order No. 64 and 65 with regard to form, threshold, and grounds necessary for a member to move a special motion for the removal from office by impeachment of the Deputy President,” he said.

“Having determined that the special motion is admissible with respect to the motion of removal of a person from office, a member shall give notice of motion to the house within three sitting days following approval by the Speaker.”
