Elachi pleads with Ruto to support Sakaja amid pressure over Kenya Power row

Dagoretti North Member of Parliament Beatrice Elachi on Sunday, March 2, 2025, pleaded with President William Ruto to support Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja to help him deliver for the city residents.
Speaking at Jesus Winner Ministry, Roysambu, Nairobi, Elachi asked the head of state to throw his weight behind Sakaja, who is facing pressure from different sectors over waste dumping at Stima Plaza over a disagreement with Kenya Power.
Elachi noted that most Nairobi residents were deeply concerned by the state of the city, especially about its cleanliness, but indicated Ruto’s support would help the governor honour the people’s demands and expectations.
“Ni vizuri kupenda nchi yetu. Ni vizuri kulinda nchi yetu. Hapa mumekaa kabila zote, nchi yetu ni gani?Si Nairobi ndio nchi yetu? Si tulinde hii Nairobi, tushike rais tumwambia shika gavana, tengeneza hii Kanairo ing’are ikuwe jinsi watu wanapenda kuiona (It is good to love this country. It is good to protect this country. We have all seated here, irrespective of our tribes. Where is our country? Is Nairobi not part of our country? We protect Nairobi, join the President, and ask him to support our governor so that Nairobi can be cleaned as people want it to be),” Elachi stated during the church service.

Row with Kenya Power
The row between Nairobi County and Kenya Power played out in the public after a heap of trash was dumped outside Stima Plaza.
The garbage and escalating conflict sparked uproar across different platforms. Speaking after holding a meeting with Kenya Power officials, Sakaja expressed regret over the dumping of garbage outside Stima Plaza.
Sakaja further ordered the removal of garbage trucks that had blocked entrances at the building.

“It was unfortunate that one of the trucks tipped garbage. That was not the intention, and that is why the garbage was cleared in less than 30 minutes,” he stated.
He distanced himself from the dumping incident and said internal action would be taken against those responsible.
Sakaja also directed the immediate restoration of water supply to Stima Plaza, which had been cut off as part of City Hall’s efforts to pressure Kenya Power into settling outstanding wayleave fees.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen condemned the dumping incident, revealing that the ministry had launched the investigation to bring those responsible to book.
On the other hand, the National Assembly revealed plans to summon Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to explain action taken against the person responsible for the dumping.
