Dagoretti North Member of Parliament (MP) Beatrice Elachi has sounded the alarm on what she describes as a rising and disturbing trend of sperm harvesting among Kenyan youth.

Speaking on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, during an interview with a local TV station, Elachi called for immediate legislative action to protect vulnerable young men.

According to Elachi, kidneys are not the only target in the business of organ trafficking. She argues that vulnerable youth are offered amounts ranging from Ksh100,000 to have their sperm harvested, a situation she describes as sad.

“It is not just about the kidneys; it is very sad today in the country. We have a very high harvesting of sperm from our young people, and it is very sad, and even the doctors sometimes are wondering, but you see, you are coming with someone, and everyone has Ksh100k, and they have their pocket money,” Elachi said.

Legislation

She further noted the scale of the issue, warning that it is growing rapidly and requires urgent government intervention.

“It is something that is very high in the country now, and it is something we need to look at and to protect young people,” she emphasised.

Investigation

Elachi’s concerns come days after Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale inaugurated the Independent Investigative Committee on Tissue and Organ Transplant Services.

The committee was inaugurated on Friday, April 25, 2025, at a function that was also attended by Ouma Oluga, Principal Secretary for Medical Services; Mary Muthoni, PS Public Health and Professional Standards; and Director General for Health Patrick Amoth.

“Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale today inaugurated the Independent Investigative Committee on Tissue and Organ Transplant Services at Afya House, Nairobi, pursuant to Gazette Notice No. 78 dated 23rd April 2025.

“The committee, chaired by Prof. Elizabeth Bukusi, has been established in response to public concern over serious allegations of malpractice and ethical violations in organ transplant procedures at Mediheal Group of Hospitals,” a statement by the Ministry of Health shared on X on Friday, April 25, 2025.

According to the ministry’s statement, Duale said the investigation will help earn public trust in the health system again.
