Police in Kwale County have arrested a lorry driver and intercepted a lorry after officers from the Coast Regional Headquarters intercepted a vehicle ferrying cannabis along the busy Mombasa–Nairobi Highway.

The National Police Service (NPS) said the operation happened on Monday, October 6, 2025, during a routine patrol at Mackinnon area, a known checkpoint for drug trafficking and illegal cargo smuggling.

In a statement shared on its official X account by the National Police Service on Monday, October 6, 2025, NPS said the police found the sacks containing Cannabis.

“Police officers from the Coast Regional Headquarters, while on patrol, intercepted a lorry at Mackinnon along the Mombasa-Nairobi Road. Upon searching the lorry, the officers found two sacks containing cannabis sativa.” NPS said in a statement.

According to police, the driver was immediately taken into custody and is currently being held at Mackinnon Road Police Station as investigations continue.

“The driver was arrested and is being held in custody at Mackinnon Road Police Station, awaiting processing and arraignment in court,” NPS said.

Authorities also confirmed that the impounded lorry has been detained at the same facility as evidence in the ongoing case. The seizure adds to a series of recent crackdowns where security officers have intercepted drugs concealed in vehicles, passenger buses, and cargo containers along the Coast route.

“The lorry has been impounded at the same facility,” police said in a statement.

NPS emphasised that the war on narcotics remains a top priority, especially amid growing concerns about the link between drug trafficking and rising crime rates in the region. “The National Police Service reiterates its unwavering commitment to combating illicit drugs across the country,” the statement read.

Police have urged members of the public to cooperate by reporting suspicious activities that could help dismantle drug networks operating in different parts of the country.
