Busia: Police intercept motorcylist ferrying Ksh360K worth of bhang

Police officers in Busia County have arrested a person of interest and recovered a large consignment of cannabis, the National Police Service (NPS) confirmed on Saturday, September 27, 2025. The arrest took place at the Suo roadblock along the Busia–Kisumu Highway during a routine check.

According to the NPS, the individual was transporting the suspected narcotic on a motorcycle when officers stopped him for inspection. Upon searching the person of interest, the police discovered 12 kilograms of cannabis, locally known as bhang, with an estimated street value of Ksh360,000. Two other individuals who were with him managed to flee before police could apprehend them.

“Police officers manning the Suo roadblock on the Busia–Kisumu Highway in Busia County today arrested a suspect who was transporting suspected narcotic drugs on a motorcycle,” the statement read.

“Upon searching him, the officers discovered 12 kilograms of cannabis (bhang) with an estimated street value of Ksh 360,000. Two other individuals accompanying the suspect managed to escape.”

The arrested person of interest is now in custody and is expected to be arraigned in court. The cannabis recovered has been secured as evidence. The NPS commended the officers for their vigilance and emphasised that the fight against drug trafficking remains a top priority.

Crackdown across Kenya

This arrest is part of a wider crackdown on illegal activities across the country. Earlier on the same day, a person of interest was arrested in Nandi County for transporting 37.5 litres of illicit brew, also known as chang’aa, on a motorcycle. Police officers from Kapsabet station, working with the National Government Administration Organisation, apprehended the individual in Kamurguiywo. He is set to appear in court on Monday, September 29, 2025.

Similarly, officers in Baringo County conducted targeted raids in Eldama Ravine, recovering 60 litres of illicit alcohol, including 20 litres of chang’aa and 40 litres of kangara. The person of interest found at the scene is also in custody and awaiting arraignment.

In Makindu, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested two persons of interest in connection with a motor vehicle theft racket along the busy Mombasa-Nairobi highway. They are claimed to have targeted vehicles heading to Uganda, including unregistered cars with Kenya Dealers plates.
