Every county should have a National Youth Service (NYS) training college to accommodate the large number of youth seeking to undergo the government-sponsored training.

While making their presentation to the National Taskforce on Police, Prisons and NYS Reforms, Nandi residents said despite government effort to recruit thousands of youth to NYS training every year, many were still left out.

They said having an NYS college in every county will give more youth an opportunity to undergo the training.

“It is difficult to join NYS just like other discipline forces because the numbers of youths who seek recruitment is high,” Stella Ruto, a trader of Kapsabet town told former Chief Justice David Maraga-led taskforce.

Ruto, however, thanked the government for its continued efforts to equip thousands of youths with necessary fields through NYS training.

“Our government needs to expand the training to accommodate more youth without compromising the quality of training,” Ruto suggested.

Edwin Bor, also a resident of Kapsabet town, said like other devolved functions of government, the NYS training should be felt at the grassroots.

Residents also asked the government to tackle corruption which, they said, denies many qualified youths an opportunity to join disciplined forces.

Maraga (pictured) said the taskforce had received similar calls elsewhere and asked counties to be prepared to set aside land for colleges if the recommendations are adopted by the government.
