Dennis Itumbi: United opposition is already divided over 2027 power-sharing talks
By Emmanuel Rono, July 5, 2026President William Ruto’s Digital Strategist Dennis Itumbi has claimed that cracks are already emerging within the United Alternative Government over power-sharing arrangements ahead of the 2027 General Election.
In a statement on his X account on Sunday, July 5, 2026, Itumbi said negotiations within the opposition factions have exposed competing interests over the presidential ticket and the distribution of senior positions.
According to Itumbi, Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) deputy party leader Cleophas Malala is pushing for ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna to be considered for the deputy president position.

“Under Gachagua, Malala the D/party leader is now demanding Sifuna be given the DP position,” Itumbi claimed.
Uhuru Kenyatta’s endorsement
He further said that former President Uhuru Kenyatta has thrown his weight behind a presidential ticket comprising former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and the Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

“BUT THEN, Uhunye has endorsed Matiang’i and the SKM ticket. MEANING? It’s OVER for them. Gachagua agreed but demands 30 per cent share,” Itumbi wrote.
The digital strategist also claimed that other opposition leaders, among them Martha Karua, Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and DAP-Kenya leader Eugene Wamalwa, have rejected the reported arrangement.
“Karua, Natembeya, Wamalwa & others have disagreed with this,” he added.
Naming presidential candidate
This comes a day after Gachagua revealed that the United Opposition will not be rushed into naming its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
Speaking at his Wamunyoro home in Nyeri County during a meeting with Githunguri constituency leaders on Saturday, July 4, 2026, Gachagua said the opposition remains committed to presenting a single presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto.

“We can name our candidate as late as the 15th of May. That is the deadline for ya kupeana a presidential candidate. Ata tukiwa named on the 13th of May, iko makosa?” Gachagua posed.
According to Gachagua, the coalition would not allow its rivals to exploit an early announcement to sow divisions or target its preferred candidate.
“We will not give you the advantage of dividing us. We will not give you the opportunity to intimidate our flag bearer. We will not give you the opportunity to persecute our flag bearer. The single presidential candidate remains our secret weapon until the last minute,” he said.
