DCI obtain CCTV footage showing Jirongo’s last movements before the accident
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched comprehensive investigations into the death of former Lugari Member of Parliament, Hon. Cyrus Jirongo, who succumbed to injuries sustained in a fatal road traffic accident along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway, by obtaining CCTV footage from the area of the incident.
The accident occurred on the night of December 13, 2025, in the Karai area, with the collision reported at approximately 2:19 a.m. Preliminary findings indicate that Hon. Jirongo’s vehicle, registration number KCZ 305U, was involved in a head-on collision with a public service vehicle bus, registration number KCU 576A, operated by Climax Company Ltd.
According to the DCI, the impact was severe, pushing Hon. Jirongo’s vehicle approximately 25 metres from the point of collision, while the PSV bus came to a halt about 50 metres away. Following the incident, a multi-agency investigative team comprising homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory was deployed to the scene.

During the initial examination, detectives secured key exhibits and obtained CCTV footage from Eagol Petrol Station, located near the accident scene.
Preliminary analysis of the footage shows that at 2:18:40 a.m., Hon. Jirongo drove into the petrol station from the Nairobi direction but did not refuel. At 2:19:10 a.m., his vehicle stopped at the station’s exit before making a right turn at 2:19:19 a.m., heading back toward Nairobi. Moments later, at 2:19:25 a.m., the PSV bus was captured ramming into his vehicle.

The driver

The PSV driver, identified as Tyrus Kamau Githinji, has been interrogated by detectives after previously recording a statement at the Naivasha Traffic Base. He was released on cash bail as investigations continue into the offence of causing death by dangerous driving.
He is expected to report back to the Naivasha Traffic Base on December 22, 2025, for further police action.

Further analysis
Further forensic analysis is scheduled as teams prepare to revisit the scene to gather additional evidence. Detectives are also working to reconstruct Hon. Jirongo’s final movements before the accident, including recording statements from individuals who last interacted with him hours earlier at Karen Oasis Bar in Nairobi.
Additional CCTV footage is undergoing detailed analysis, while statements are expected from passengers who were aboard the Climax Company bus at the time of the crash. Upon completion of investigations, the final report will be compiled and forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions for review and further action.
