DCI dismisses reports of Indian doctor receiving Ksh300M to poison Raila
By Mustafa Juma, June 12, 2026The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has dismissed as false and misleading viral social media claims that former Prime Minister Raila Odinga was poisoned by an Indian doctor who was allegedly paid Ksh300 million to carry out the act.
In a statement issued on Friday, June 12, 2026, the DCI flagged the widely circulated post as fake, warning members of the public against spreading or believing unverified information regarding the circumstances surrounding Raila’s death.
The viral claim alleged that an Indian doctor had confessed to receiving Ksh300 million to poison the veteran opposition leader while he was undergoing treatment in India.
According to the post, the doctor allegedly admitted to administering botulinum toxin, a powerful neurotoxin that affects the nervous system by blocking signals between nerves and muscles, potentially leading to paralysis.
However, the DCI categorically rejected the allegations, stating that the information being shared online was fabricated and lacked any factual basis.
“FAKE”, the DCI flagged the claims.

Fake news concerns
The latest fact-check by the DCI comes amid growing concerns over the spread of misinformation and fake news online, particularly content targeting prominent political figures and public officials.
Authorities have increasingly been forced to intervene to debunk fabricated reports, doctored images, and false statements that gain traction across social media platforms.

Raila’s death continues to attract speculation
The renewed claims emerge nearly eight months after the death of Raila Odinga, who passed away on October 15, 2025, while in Kerala, India.
According to reports at the time, the former Prime Minister collapsed while taking a morning walk and was rushed to Devamatha Hospital in Koothattukulam.
Medical personnel reportedly attempted emergency resuscitation procedures, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the facility.
Initial reports indicated that cardiac arrest was the immediate cause of death.
Subsequent accounts also pointed to underlying health complications that had affected the veteran politician in the months leading up to his death.
However, Siaya Governor James Orengo in February 2026 claimed that Raila was killed by people he did not name, claiming that they were now targeting his Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.

While speaking at a highly charged Linda Mwananchi rally at Amalemba Grounds in Kakamega Town on Saturday, February 21, 2026, the Siaya governor told supporters that after the late ODM leader, who led the party for over two decades, died, some people have now embarked on a mission to finish the party.
“Kifo ya Raila Odinga, wameua Raila Odinga, sasa wanataka kuua chama cha Raila,” Orengo claimed.
Previous health challenges
Before travelling to India for treatment, Raila had reportedly suffered a stroke and was managing other chronic health conditions, including diabetes and hypertension.
His medical journey had attracted national attention, with President William Ruto reportedly facilitating his travel to India after consultations with his family.
The government at the time assured the public that Raila was receiving specialised medical care as he sought treatment abroad.
Following his death, the former Prime Minister was buried on October 19, 2025, in a ceremony attended by national leaders, foreign dignitaries, and thousands of mourners.
