The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed it is continuing a detailed probe into the circumstances that led to the death of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo, issuing a correction after an earlier communications error misstated the vehicle’s registration number.

In a brief public notice shared via X on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, investigators said the registration of the car involved in the crash is KCZ 350C, not KCZ 305U as was previously reported. The DCI expressed regret for the typo and any confusion it caused, adding they remain focused on piecing together what happened on the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway on the night of Saturday, December 13, 2025.

Registration mix-up

”We wish to clarify to the public that the registration number of the vehicle involved in the accident that claimed the life of Hon. Cyrus Jirongo is KCZ 350C, and not KCZ 305U as earlier communicated. We sincerely regret this typo and any inconvenience or confusion it may have caused,” the statement said in brief.

Detectives have been poring over CCTV footage, interviewing the Climax Bus driver and examining the damaged vehicles. The driver of the bus involved has given an account that he took evasive action to protect about 65 passengers after the Mercedes. Officers have also taken statements from bystanders and petrol station attendants who were on the scene earlier that night.

Forensic questions

The official police narrative describing the crash as a straightforward head-on collision has been challenged by the family of the former MP, suggesting the event may have been more complex.

Jirongo’s family has publicly called for an independent probe to resolve inconsistencies in the official account and to establish the full sequence of events that led to his death. The public appetite for transparency has only grown since the conflicting reports and the registration-number error emerged.

Preliminary findings

The accident occurred on the night of December 13, 2025, in the Karai area, with the collision reported at approximately 2:19 am. Preliminary findings indicate that Hon. Jirongo’s vehicle, registration number KCZ 305U, was involved in a head-on collision with a public service vehicle bus, registration number KCU 576A, operated by Climax Company Ltd.
