Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki on Thursday announced that the government has deployed a contingent of special security personnel to quell and quash the ongoing violence in Sondu town and its environs.

Through a statement, CS Kindiki announced that the special deployment will be supervised jointly by the Rift Valley and Nyanza regional security teams and that the personnel deployed have been instructed to ensure immediate resumption of normalcy in the area.

“This evening, the Government has deployed a contingent of specialist security personnel to contain the escalation of violent crime in Sondu Town and its environs. Lives have been lost, property destroyed, and civil order grossly undermined during the past two days,” the statement reads in parts.

According to the CS, the personnel have been instructed to ensure that all perpetrators of the crimes committed against the people of Sondu town and its environs have been arrested.

The outspoken CS also announced the transfer of all local security heads and public officers whose competence and impartiality led to the success of the current violence witnessed in the region.

He further announced that additional measures to contain the situation will be announced tomorrow.

“In the meantime, it has been decided to transfer all local security heads on both sides of the border and other security and public officers whose want of effectiveness, impartiality and/or competence is deemed to have resulted in the success of the criminals,” Kindiki said.

“Additional measures to contain the situation and suppress further crime may be announced tomorrow after a need assessment and review of the efficacy of the measures put in place tonight,’ he added.
