Court reinstates cop fired over relief maize sale claims

Court of Appeal has ordered the reinstatement of a senior police officer who was given marching orders following his vetting more than four years ago.
George Kingi Bamba, who was serving as the senior superintendent of police in charge of Kirinyaga East sub-county in Kirinyaga, will get back his job, if he has not already retired, with his full salary and other benefits.
Appellate judges William Ouko, Wanjiru Karanja and Fatuma Sichale said Kingi suffered unlawful removal by the National Police Service Commission, on allegations of selling relief maize while serving as Lagdera OCPD.
Overturn decision
They overturned the decision made on March 30, 2017 by Employment and Labour Relations judge Monica Mbaru, dismissing his application for review.
“With respect, the judge erred in her conclusion that Kingi repackaged relief food, that he and his wife purchased food from refugees and that they engaged in unlawful trade without any independent proof. She failed to balance Kingi’s achievements against the unproven accusations of impropriety,” Justices Ouko, Karanja and Sichale said.
