Constituencies with high population get raw deal, says Thika Town MP
Thika Town MP Alice Ng’ang’a now wants the government to review the National Government –Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) allocation formula, terming the current one as discriminatory.
She said her area of representation has been getting a raw deal compared to sparsely-populated constituencies. She urged the Kenya Kwanza administration to rise to the occasion and bring to an end unequal distribution of resources, saying all Kenyans have equal rights.
Speaking during a public participation forum that sought to collect views on utilisation of CDF kitty allocated to the constituency for 2022/23 and 2023/24 financial years, the MP said the current allocation cannot meet the needs of her constituents.
“I am not comfortable with the CDF kitty I am receiving. Not to mean it’s bad but according to the population, it’s peanuts,” she said.
“For constituencies that are very populous to receive equal CDF allocation with the ones with very few people is unfair. CDF should not be distributed as it is being done today,” she added.
The lawmaker pointed out the need for the government to allow the population to determine allocations to ensure that all Kenyans feel accommodated and fairly treated.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is supposed to adjust the boundaries at intervals of not less than eight years, and not more than 12 years, a timeline that expires next year.
The MP urged other parliamentarians to join the push for change in resources allocation and distribution formula.
During the consultative forum held at Community Hall in Hospital Ward, residents urged the MP to prioritise education of children by issuing more bursaries and renovating dilapidated school facilities.
Residents also urged the legislator to complete projects that were started by her predecessors to ensure they get value for money.
