Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua has announced an employment opportunity for Kenyan motorcycle riders, with 600 positions available in Dubai.

In a statement shared on his X account on Friday, December 13, 2024, Mutua said a United Arab Emirates (UAE) company is conducting interviews in Malindi over the next two days.

However, applicants are required to cover their pre-arrival fees, which include payments to the HR provider in Dubai, airfare, medical fees, and processing costs. The total cost amounts to Ksh167,900, with Ksh16,500 for the medical examination payable upfront. Mutua assured applicants that banks and the Youth Fund have aligned to offer loans for the required payments, allowing candidates to reimburse the money once they start working in Dubai.

In his statement, Mutua emphasized the transparency of the recruitment process and highlighted the Ministry of Labour’s role in ensuring ethical practices.

“The company does NOT cater for any pre-arrival fees. That is borne by the employee. We have analyzed the figures and ascertained their accuracy. 1. Payment to HR provider in Dubai – Dhs 2,200 = Kshs. 81,400 2. Air ticket: Kshs. 40,000 3. Medical fee: Kshs. 16,500 4. Processing fees (Visas, paperwork etc) – 30,000 Total to employee: Kshs. 167,900,” Mutua stated.

Adding;

“We have aligned banks and youth fund that are willing to LOAN you the cash and then you will pay back once you get to Dubai and are working, over a short period.”

The interviews are taking place at Watamu Primary School on Friday, December 13, and Saturday, December 14, 2024, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Successful applicants are expected to travel to Dubai before the end of the year.

According to Mutua, the job positions are for motorcycle riders, with the UAE company willing to train those hired for four months and assist them in acquiring UAE motorcycle licenses. While prior experience is not mandatory, Mutua encouraged bodaboda riders to apply.

Qualification and compensation

Applicants must possess a Kenyan passport or proof of an e-citizen passport application. They also need a valid certificate of good conduct and a rider’s license.

Mutua mentioned that selected riders will earn 7.5 dirhams (KSH263) per delivery trip, with an average of 15 trips daily. This amounts to 112.5 dirhams (Ksh3,956) daily, which translates to approximately 2,925 dirhams (Ksh104,000) tax-free per month for 26 working days.

The CS noted that ambitious individuals can make upwards of 30 deliveries a day, increasing their earnings. The company will also provide free accommodation, a work motorcycle with full maintenance, a work visa, and comprehensive medical care.
