Three candidates are set to battle it out for the position of Kirinyaga County Assembly Speaker during the House’s first sitting on Wednesday, September 21.

Among those cleared by the assembly clerk Kamau Aidi is Joel Wagura, a two-term MCA for Kariti ward and immediate former deputy speaker for the assembly.

Wagura was elected Deputy Speaker in 2017 after retaining his Kariti ward MCA position which he first won in 2013.

He is banking on his experience as deputy speaker to win the seat.

“I can organize the assembly and ensure that it serves the public in the best way possible because I’m a servant of the people,” he said.

Also on the list is Julius Murimi Muteti, a politician and businessman from Ndia constituency.

Murimi, an Economist and Financial Consultant, says if elected as the speaker of the county assembly, he will ensure good working relations between the House and the Executive.

The third candidate is Calbert Munene Njiru, who has been a county government official.

The MCAs are set to take oath of office from 10:00 am before electing their speaker and his deputy.

Unlike the seat of the speaker where the candidates are not supposed to be elected MCAs, the position of a deputy speaker is held by an elected member of the assembly.

The position of deputy speaker has attracted two candidates namely Jinaro Jamumo and Kinyua Wangui.

Kinyua Wangui is a third-term MCA representing Mutira Ward. The MCA, who served as Majority Leader in his first term, spearheaded a motion to impeach Governor Anne Waiguru in June 2020 over allegations of abuse of office. The impeachment was, however, shot down by the Senate for lack of sufficient evidence.
