The Second Annual Athletics Kenya (AK) Athletes’ seminar ended on Saturday in Eldoret with track and field stars endorsing interpreters to be made available during major championships for easy communication and formation of a welfare association

The four-day event themed: ‘I choose designed to deal with doping menace that has continued to haunt the country, to an extent that Kenya remains in World Athletics doping Category ‘A’

The athletics stars were categorical that having qualified interpreters accompanying Kenyan teams will help guide them during pre-and post-event interviews.

“I mean, that is long overdue. We are not able to tell our stories effectively, just because we can’t communicate well in English.

Most of the time our stories are distorted or misrepresented just because of language barrier,”former World javelin champion Julius Yego said during the conference.

For a busy season ahead,  the World U-20 Championships is likely to be debut event to have interpreters coming to the fold for team Kenya and Olympics in Tokyo to follow.

“We need to educate our juniors and seniors that there is nothing wrong in using whatever language you’re comfortable with.

There is no shame in using your mother tongue to communicate. The most important thing is getting your story out there,” said veteran journalist Evelyne Watta during a media session with the athletes.
