Head coach Fred Ambani has broken his silence on AFC Leopards’ approach to the January transfer window, revealing that the club will not be actively involved in bringing in more players.

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) premier league log leaders have been peripheral players in the already opened midseason transfer period, with no single signing reporting to the den in the window.

Ambani attributed the development to a deliberate approach from the club.

“We will have one or two players in. We do not expect to exceed that number. We believe the team is on the right track. Normally, when you bring in new faces, it kind of destablises the team, and you have to start working again afresh with the new players,” he stated.

Ambani pointed to wastefulness in the team’s offensive line in a fleeting remark that could inform their choices for the inbounds personnel.

“We have been getting chances but not being able to convert. This has been our main undoing, and we hope to rectify these,” he said while commenting on their display in the 2-0 win over Nairobi United.

Title ambitions

Ambani also reiterated his team’s title credential for the season, stating that the league glory will be crucial in repaying the trust of the Leopards faithful.

Leopards last clinched the league title over a decade ago, but the club has shown tremendous improvement in the season, leaving the fanbase hopeful of quenching the long-awaited league silverware.

“We are determined to go for the title and repay the trust of our fans and give them something to smile about. They have been loyal and deserve something to cheer them up,” he added.

Preseason signings

The former KPL giants were among the active recruiters before the start of the season, roping in more than seven players in a preseason shopping spree.

Among the club’s signings were former Sharks man and Police FC midfielder Tyson Otieno and left central defender Rami Lasso Coulibaly from Morocco’s Chabab Alam Tanger.

Others were Ugandan Samuel Ssenyonjo, striker Elias Mugane, and Deng Kang, who was promoted from the juniors team, AFC Leopards Cubs.

Defender Brian Ojok and striker Elias Mugane also signed contracts with the club.
