Human rights activists from Uganda and Kenya yesterday held a peaceful protest in Nairobi to condemn the human rights abuses in Uganda.

They also called for the immediate release of Ugandan presidential Opposition candidate Bobi Wine who was arrested on Wednesday for the second time this month, sparking violent protests in the country.

Uganda People’s Power Forum, Kenya Chapter National Coordinator Alex Mukasa speaking to the press on Kenyatta Avenue called on President Yoweri Museveni to leave power, saying:  “The old dictator has been in power for over three decades.”

Mukasa accused police of terrorising Ugandans, condemning the killings of innocent people who were protesting the arrest of Bobi Wine.

“Arbitrary arrest, killings and cases of human rights abuses should be investigated by Amnesty International among other relevant world bodies.”

Mukasa called upon the East African Community, Africa Union, UN leadership to wake up and condemn what is happening in Uganda to prevent genocide happening.

HAKI Africa Programme Officer Salima Macharia said civil societies and human rights organisations in Kenya are in solidarity with Ugandans who are fighting dictatorship and impunity perpetuated against them.

“Arbitrary arrest should be condemned, Wine and other politicians must be released. We condemn the human right abuses and killings in Uganda. Power belongs to the people.”

As the Ugandan election draws near, Museveni’s administration is clamping down on the opposition.
