2 AK-47 rifles surrendered in Elgeyo Marakwet as disarmament gains ground
The National Police Service (NPS) has reported fresh progress in the ongoing disarmament operation in Elgeyo Marakwet after two men voluntarily handed over illegal firearms to officers at Embobut Police Station in Marakwet East.
According to the Service, the weapons surrendered on Monday included two AK-47 rifles. One of the firearms was loaded with twenty-two rounds of ammunition, while the second rifle was submitted with an empty magazine. Police say such voluntary handovers are increasingly becoming common as communities warm up to peace efforts.
In its statement posted on X on Saturday, December 6, 2025, NPS noted that the return of the weapons forms part of a broader initiative aimed at reducing armed violence and restoring stability in the region.
“The voluntary handover forms part of the ongoing disarmament exercise, which continues to take root in the region and is contributing to improved peace and stability,” the Service said.
Security agencies have been working closely with local elders, administrators and residents to encourage the surrender of illegal weapons. For years, parts of Elgeyo Marakwet have struggled with banditry and inter-community clashes, driven in part by widespread firearm possession. Authorities now say cooperation from the public is improving.

Since the operation began, NPS reports that a total of 314 illegal firearms have been recovered across Elgeyo Marakwet County, marking one of the most significant progress points in recent years.
In its statement, the Service expressed gratitude to residents and local leaders who have been actively supporting peace-building efforts.
“The National Police Service applauds residents, elders, and local leadership for their cooperation and continued support,” the statement read.
NPS added that officers remain committed to ensuring lasting peace and safety in the region, and encouraged more individuals still holding illegal guns to hand them over voluntarily.
“The Service remains committed to ensuring lasting peace and urges more individuals in possession of illegal weapons to surrender them for the safety and well-being of all,” the statement reads
