Fourteen Members of Parliament and Senators have supported a  bill aimed at safeguarding the rights and freedoms of intersex persons.

The Registration of Persons (Amendments) Bill, 2019 sponsored by Nominated Senator Isaac Mwaura which is under public participation, will be tabled at the Senate once the process is over.

“The bill seeks to amend the Registration of Persons Act, Cap. 107 and the Births Deaths Registration Act, Cap 149 to make provision for the registration of persons born with both male and female reproductive organs,” said Mwaura.

Mwaura was holding a law reform advocacy meeting in  Nairobi with intersex persons where 14 Members of Parliament attended and vowed to support it. He said the bill will ensure that the registration of such intersex persons reflects their unique gender.

Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma supported the bill but said it should draw a  line between  Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) and intersex.
