Police have arrested a man and confiscated his motorbike and at least 40 litres of illicit brew during a crackdown on illicit brews in Nyamira.

In a statement on Monday, August 25, 2025, the National Police Service (NPS) indicated that a man was arrested as he was transporting the brew along the Ekerenyo-Riomego murram road.

“Police officers from Ekerenyo Police Station in Nyamira North Sub-County, in collaboration with National Government Administration Officers from Bokurati Sub-Location, conducted a crackdown on illicit brews along the Ekerenyo–Riomego murram road,” NPS said.

“During the operation, a motorcycle loaded with two 20-litre jerricans of illicit brew (chang’aa) was intercepted. A male suspect was arrested and placed in custody, while the motorcycle and the 40 litres of chang’aa were seized and secured as exhibits.”

“The National Police Service reiterates its commitment to eradicating illicit brews and narcotic drugs and urges members of the public to support the ongoing crackdown by sharing timely information with law enforcement authorities.”

This comes barely a day after the police, led by the Staff Officer Operations (SOOPs) for Kuresoi North, conducted a coordinated operation that destroyed approximately 1,100 litres of illicit brew (Kangara) and related brewing equipment.

Illicit alcohol crackdown

The crackdown took place in Ses-Boinet Village, near Bararget Forest, as part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal alcohol production in the area.

In a statement on Sunday, August 24, 2025, police said the operation was intelligence-led and involved a multi-agency security team comprising officers from Sirikwa Police Station and National Government Administration Officers from Nyota Location and Olbumbu Sub-Location.

“During the operation, approximately 1,100 litres of illicit brew (kangara) and brewing apparatus were recovered and destroyed.”

The persons of interest behind the illicit trade escaped, but authorities say they are being actively pursued

“The multi-agency security team is now pursuing those involved in the illicit trade,” the NPS added, highlighting ongoing efforts to bring offenders to justice.
