I walked to school almost half-naked, says actress Rose Nyabhate

Actress and content producer Rose Nyabhate has narrated how her primary school teachers came to her rescue after she went to school for months in tattered uniform.
Rose, who has starred in TV shows such as Hapa Kule and Classmates, says her education journey was not an easy ride, as she had to keep up with ridicule from classmates.
“My teachers once donated uniform for me. I had walked for months with a tattered dress. The behind part was gone, so I would put on a black skirt to conceal my (nakedness). With my tattered dress, I was the smartest in class, I would stand many times to answer questions amidst laughter from cheeky boys seated behind me,” says the actress, who also prides herself as a stand-up comedian, voice artiste, scriptwriter and social worker.
But she adds that even with her rugged uniform, she put every effort to become the best she could at school, always outsmarting even the best dressed.
“I still would represent my schools in all major functions. I did poems, made friends from ‘up there’ and dined with the who-is-who. I was appointed an ambassador for a girl child project and later got elected a youth representative for Western Women Empowerment project,” she says.
Rose says that she was overcome with emotions when her headteacher handed her a new dress and a sweater.
She said: “My mama (who died when she was four-years-old) would never have believed from the well-to-do school she had enrolled me in Eldoret, I would end up walking almost half-naked.”
She has since started an initiative to provide school uniforms for needy pupils starting January 2020, through a campaign dubbed ‘Smart Dress for a Smart Kid’.
“Oh yeah, I wanted to do this one day, so I’ll be giving out (school uniforms) to smart needy pupils through a referral from teachers for a boy and girl, just like they did for me,” she says.
Yesterday, Rose cancelled her birthday party to channel the finances towards her noble course.
“My birthday party cancelled!! Money meant for the party will buy uniforms for needy pupils in the village. Boys and girls starting January 2020,” she wrote on her social media pages.
He new online drama show called Masoja, which runs on her YouTube channel, Mocha TV, has created an online buzz due to its catchy nature.
