The year 2024 is a monumental election period, with more than half of the world’s population residing in countries holding national elections. One election stands out for its potential global impact. US elections stand out as the election poised to shape the course of international relations, economic policies, and environmental initiatives for years to come.

The choice between the Democrats and Republicans carries immense weight, as it will shape not only the destiny of America but also play a pivotal role in shaping international policies.

The two major parties are neck to neck in opinion polls. But which party has favored Africa in its relations? When deciding whether to support the Republican or Democratic parties concerning Africa, it is crucial to consider the distinct policies and priorities of each party. Historically, U.S.-Africa policy has enjoyed bipartisan support, with both parties recognizing Africa’s strategic importance. This bipartisan nature means that both parties have advocated for initiatives beneficial to Africa at different times. Over the years, Republicans have focused on economic partnerships, security cooperation, and counterterrorism efforts. They emphasize reducing barriers to trade and investment, aligning with private sector-led growth initiatives. Democrats often prioritize development aid, health initiatives, and human rights. They promote trade initiatives such as the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which provides African countries with duty-free access to the U.S. market for certain goods.

The Prosper Africa programme, that enhances two-way commerce and investment, has the backing of both parties. Republicans emphasize bilateral accords and private investment, while Democrats prioritise multilateral trade deals and development funding.

African nations may find it advantageous to interact with both sides to take full advantage of trade and collaboration prospects. They should accommodate the existing administration’s policies while pushing for certain programs that support Africa’s development objectives.

Did you know that the outcome of the US election could affect the chances of a third world war? These will have a significant impact on the future of countries like Taiwan. China’s ambition to take over Taiwan could have consequences for military cooperation, US involvement in peacekeeping, and international security efforts. The election could also affect political stability in African countries and help drive democratic reforms.

The policies and actions taken by the new leadership in the United States will undoubtedly have a ripple effect on Kenya’s economy, trade relations, and security partnerships.

Kenya, as a strategic partner, is directly impacted by U.S. electoral outcomes. The relationship between the two countries involves collaborations in trade, security, and environmental initiatives. Recent high-level engagements, such as Kenyan President William Ruto’s state visit to the U.S., underscore Kenya’s importance in Africa-U.S. relations.

In the past, Kenya has served as a focal point for engagement by both the Democratic and Republican parties in the United States. Each party offers distinct advantages based on its foreign policy and platforms. The Republican Party is often associated with investment and trade initiatives, focusing on fostering commercial partnerships and economic ties. This approach could lead to increased trade opportunities and support for the growth of Kenya’s private sector. Supporters of Donald Trump’s Republican policies argue that Kenya’s economy could experience more sustainable growth by prioritizing commerce over aid.

In contrast, Kamala Harris’s Democratic Party places a strong emphasis on promoting democratic governance and providing development and humanitarian aid. Historically, foreign aid budgets have expanded under Democratic administrations, with a focus on enhancing Kenya’s infrastructure, healthcare, and education systems.

The impact of each party on Kenya depends on the priorities of the current U.S. administration and Kenya’s strategic goals. While Republicans may benefit Kenya through trade and investment, Democrats may contribute more through aid and development programs. Whom should Kenya support? You be the judge!
