Tips to stay safe as floods hit Nairobi

By , October 4, 2025

As the short rains set in across Nairobi, residents are once again being reminded to brace for heavy downpours that often lead to flash floods, traffic chaos, and safety risks.

The city’s poor drainage systems have been a major concern lately, with the Nairobi City County put on the spot for complacency as even moderate rains turn into a hazard, particularly in flood-prone areas like South C, Industrial Area, Kasarani, Kibera, and parts of the CBD.

Recently, the Kenya Meteorological Department predicted a week-long moderate to heavy downpour in various parts of the country, including Nairobi. Following the weather forecast, residents of Nairobi were left wading through dirty water in the Central Business District as the heavens opened on Friday evening, October 4, 2025.

”Rainfall is expected in parts of the Highlands, both East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and North-western Kenya. Isolated HEAVY rainfall events may occur in some of these areas. Stay alert and take the necessary precautions. The coastal region may also experience occasional rainfall during this period. Meanwhile, much of North-eastern Kenya and parts of the South-east are likely to remain generally dry,” Kenya Met said on Tuesday, September 30, 2025.

Exercising caution

However, to remain safe amid Governor Johnson Sakaja’s failure to fix the city’s drainage system, here are some key tips to stay out of danger during the rainy season:

Stay informed about the weather

Regularly check updates from the Kenya Meteorological Department and Nairobi County disaster response alerts. Staying ahead of forecasts allows you to plan travel and avoid risky areas when heavy rain is expected.

Avoid flooded roads and paths

Never attempt to cross flooded bridges, roads, or open drainages—just six inches of fast-moving water can sweep you off your feet.

Drive cautiously

Motorists in Nairobi are advised to slow down, keep headlights on, and maintain a safe distance between vehicles to reduce the risk of skidding or hydroplaning.

Protect your home

Residents in flood-prone estates in the city should clear blocked drains and gutters, secure loose roofing sheets, and elevate valuables to avoid water damage.

Guard against waterborne diseases

Floodwaters in Nairobi City often carry sewage and other contaminants. Avoid contact with floodwater where possible, boil or treat drinking water, and wash hands thoroughly before eating or preparing food to reduce the risk of cholera and typhoid outbreaks.

Meanwhile, the short rains in Nairobi and other parts of the country are expected to continue over this week, with authorities urging residents to exercise caution and report emergencies promptly.
