Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga’s political journey took a notable turn in 2025, a year that proved it was not just another stop along his decades-long path in leadership.

It was a season of transition, responsibility, and quiet resolve, shaped largely by the loss of his younger brother, Raila Odinga, on October 15, 2025, in India, and the sudden weight of leadership that followed.

Having spent more than three decades in politics, Oburu found himself stepping into a role that carried deep emotional meaning as well as immense political pressure.

The year thrust Oburu into the national spotlight after the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) turned to him to steady the party during a period of mourning and uncertainty. His appointment as acting party leader on Thursday, October 15, 2025, marked a turning point, not only for the party but also for his own public life.

One of the most symbolic moments of his new role came with his first official visit to Chungwa House, the ODM headquarters, on Monday, October 27, 2025. The visit was closely watched by party members and the wider public, seen as a signal that the party was ready to move forward, even as it honoured its past.

Oburu’s presence there reassured loyalists who were anxious about the future direction of the movement.

His early days in leadership were not without challenges. ODM is grappling with internal disagreements, particularly around its relationship with the government and differing views among senior members.

Oburu took on the task of calming tensions, holding consultations, and urging leaders to focus on unity rather than division. These efforts helped cool tempers and project an image of stability at a time when fractures within the party could easily have deepened.

The party’s 20th anniversary celebrations between November 14 and 16, 2025, offered another defining moment. Under Oburu’s stewardship, the milestone became a time for reflection and renewal.

The events highlighted ODM’s journey, its struggles, and its place in Kenya’s political history, while also reminding members of the values that brought them together.

As attention slowly shifted toward the 2027 General Election, Oburu was careful in shaping the party’s position. He made it clear that ODM had not settled on any endorsements, pushing back against premature declarations by individual members.

This cautious approach shows his intent to keep the party united and focused on collective decision-making.

Throughout 2025, Oburu repeatedly signalled his commitment to preserving the legacy of the late party leader Raila Odinga. Rather than dramatic gestures, his leadership was defined by measured steps, patience, and an emphasis on continuity.
