The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has appointed Siaya County Senator Oburu Oginga as the party’s Acting Leader, following the passing of former Party Leader Raila Odinga.

In a statement released on Thursday, October 16, 2025, the ODM National Executive Committee (NEC) confirmed that the appointment was made unanimously and takes effect immediately.

“The National Executive Committee (NEC) has this morning met and unanimously endorsed the designation of the Senator of Siaya County, Oburu Oginga, as the Acting Party Leader. This appointment takes effect immediately,” the party said.

The move comes as the party begins a period of transition, ensuring continuity in leadership during a time of national mourning. Oburu Oginga, a veteran legislator and longtime member of ODM, is expected to provide steady guidance to the party as it navigates both internal and national political matters.

The appointment was also acknowledged by ODM supporters online, including Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai, who urged Kenyans to respect the party’s decision.

“The acting Party Leader now that Baba Raila Odinga is resting, is Oburu Odinga. Don’t listen to the people who are still in political adolescence,” Alai posted on X, emphasising the legitimacy of the NEC’s decision and calling for unity among party members.

Oburu Oginga has served in various leadership roles over the years, earning recognition for his experience in both legislative and political matters. Party insiders say his appointment is aimed at maintaining cohesion and ensuring that ODM remains focused on its strategic priorities in the coming months.

The NEC’s decision highlights the party’s commitment to upholding institutional structures and following established protocols, even in the face of loss.
