Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua now wants Meru Senator Kathuri Murungi to be given a ministerial position so that the county residents can elect another senator who will represent them well in the Senate.

Speaking to local Meru media stations on the night of Friday, June 20, 2025, Gachagua stated that since Murungi has been fighting for a ministerial position in Ruto’s government, he should be given that position, adding that there is no problem if he gets it.

In fact, he said it would be a win for the people of Meru, who would then have an opportunity to elect another senator.

According to Gachagua, Meru currently lacks representation in the Senate, as Murungi, the elected representative, is busy praising the president and pushing the government’s agenda.

“Mimi nimesema si huyu Kathuri anapigania kuwa waziri; hakuna shida si apewe, turudi kwa kiwanja. There is no problem; hiyo kwanza mimi nitafurahia. Hii Meru haina mwakilishi katika senate; tungetaka tuchague senator ambaye anatetea Wameru. As we speak today, huyo ni flower girl wa Ruto; si amuchukue tu amfanyie kazi? Na watu wameru wajitafutie kiongozi mwingine,” Gachagua said.

He went on to accuse Kathuri of blind loyalty to President Ruto, saying it would be better if he were given a Cabinet Secretary post so he can serve the president effectively while Meru people get a chance to elect someone who will truly represent their interests in the Senate.

According to Gachagua, the senator is focused on following the president at the expense of the people he was elected to represent.

Gachagua further admitted that even though he and the senator are not politically aligned, he would be happy if Murungi were awarded a CS position, as it would open the door for Meru people to elect a senator of their choice.

“Akipewa mimi nitafurahi, kwa sababu tutapata nafasi ya kumtafuta senator hapa Meru ambaye ataweza kusaidia watu wa Meru.” He added.

Advice to Kawira Mwangaza

During the same interview, the former deputy president urged the former Meru governor, Kawira Mwangaza, to join the opposition team.

He urged her that they both have a common enemy and that she should not walk alone but join hands with Mithika Linturi, Peter Munya, and him in making sure that Ruto is a one-term president.
