Gachagua pleads with Kawira Mwangaza to join opposition team

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has now come out to urge former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza not to walk alone but instead to join his team following her impeachment.
Speaking to local Meru media stations during a late-night interview on Friday, June 20, 2025, Gachagua admitted that during his tenure as DP, when Mwangaza was embattled, he used to talk to her from time to time and offer her a shoulder to lean on.
Now that they have both been impeached, he said he is the one crying more than her, joking that maybe he should look for her so they can weep together.
“Kabla Kawira, apatwe na matatizo hapo mbeleni, nilikuwa naongea na yeye nikiwa kwa ofisi; nilikuwa nampatia a shoulder to lean on. Sasa tangu nipate matatizo, sasa nalia zaidi kuliko yeye. Labda nimtafute tulia pamoja,” Gachagua said.
He went on to advise her not to walk alone but to move with people, using the analogy of buffaloes who move together not because they love one another but because of the dangers of walking alone.
“Don’t walk alone; you will go nowhere. Buffaloes don’t move together in a herd because they love one another; they move together because of the dangers of walking alone,” Gachagua stated.
Join opposition
Gachagua emphasised that if she continues to walk alone, she will not go far. Acknowledging the pain and difficult state she is currently in after being ousted from office, he urged her to join hands with Mithika Linturi, Peter Munya, and him.

He reminded her that they are not enemies, noting that they have a common enemy and that they should not waste their energy fighting one another but instead unite and direct their efforts against the shared adversary.
“Don’t walk alone; I know you are hurting, and you are in tears. You have brothers and sisters you can work with. If you work alone, you will not get far. Wacha tutafutane, Peter Munya and nugu yetu Mithika Linturi and Kawira Mwangaza. Mimi niko hapo; let us walk together for the sake of our people because Kawira cannot be my enemy, and Kawira cannot be the enemy of Linturi or Munya. Sisi watu wa mlima, tunajua adui yetu. Let’s not lose energy fighting each other.” He added.
He also warned the government against interfering with her community programmes, citing a recent incident where her meetings were disrupted and police threw teargas.
He told the state to leave Kawira alone, saying that she is just a woman and does not deserve such treatment.
