Wetang’ula rallies leaders behind Ruto, says economy is back on track
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has called on Kenyans and political leaders to rally behind President William Ruto’s development agenda, saying the country is beginning to regain stability amid ongoing economic and political pressures.
Speaking during a funeral service in Bomet County on Thursday, April 30, 2026, Wetang’ula used the moment to urge unity, warning against divisive politics as the country heads toward a heated political season. The Speaker made the remarks while attending the funeral of Mzee Edwin Kipchirchir Koech, father to Roads and Infrastructure Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir, where leaders and residents had gathered to pay their respects.
In his address, Wetang’ula emphasised the need for collective responsibility among leaders, noting that the country’s progress depends on leaders choosing national interest over personal or political differences.

Wetanguka explained why he believes Kenyans should support the current administration’s plans, pointing to what he described as renewed energy and direction from the presidency.
“Today, I called on all Kenyans to support President William Ruto’s development agenda, which I confidently noted is on the right path,” he wrote.
“While speaking at Kipketii primary school in Sotik constituency, Bomet county, during the funeral service of Mzee Edwin Kipchirchir Koech, father to Roads and Infrastructure CS Davis Chirchir, I said the President’s renewed energy and commitment had helped restore the country’s economy and secured Kenya’s future.”
The Speaker also used the platform to challenge leaders across the political divide, urging them to shift focus away from competition and instead prioritise the country’s well-being, especially at a time when political tensions are rising.
“I urged leaders, regardless of political affiliation, to put the country first above personal ambitions and asked the President to stay focused on delivering his development plans for the benefit of all Kenyans,” the statement reads.

Wetang’ula further took a moment to honour the late Mzee Koech, describing him as a humble and faithful man whose life left a lasting impact on those around him, particularly through quiet acts of kindness and strong personal values.
“I paid tribute to Mzee Koech as a devoted Christian who quietly uplifted others, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and integrity that will continue to guide us,” he wrote.
He concluded by reflecting on the values instilled within the family of the late, drawing from literature to underline the importance of discipline, humility, and moral upbringing in shaping responsible leaders and citizens.
“Drawing from Shaban Robert’s Adili na Nduguze, I noted that he instilled strong values of discipline, humility and good morals in his family and particularly his children who are celebrated achievers,” the statement reads.
