‘We want to give Kenyans a better option’ – Eugene Wamalwa stresses amid plans to form major opposition coalition
Democratic Action Party of Kenya leader Eugene Wamalwa has revealed plans are underway for the making of a major political alliance ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking while appearing on a local radio morning show on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, Wamalwa said the events at the Democratic Action Party (Kenya DAP_K) party offices in Nairobi were just the beginning of the journey to usher in an alternative government to William Ruto’s regime.
Wamalwa, who was instrumental in bringing together Kalonzo Musyoka and former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, noted that the four principals in the DAP event were only the first faces as plans to welcome more parties to join in the fold take shape.
The former Devolution CS further added that the principals will be tasked with the decision of settling on a single flag bearer to face Ruto.
“Yesterday (Monday, January 27, 2025) was not just an unveiling party headquarters. It was unveiling our new formation. It will be our new coalition and its new government. The election journey started yesterday too, with the IEBC selection panel being set up. As the opposition, we say we want to give Kenyans a better option. As they broaden the government, we are also broadening the opposition.
“We are not just talking of the four teams/principals you saw: Fred Matiangi, Kalonzo, and Rigathi Gachagua and ours. We have others coming on board. There will be a coalition that will be launched soon; others are coming to form a winning coalition,” Wamalwa said.
Kalonzo’s stance
Wamalwa’s declarations mirror those of Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who on Monday, January 27, 2025, advocated for an open approach to the formation of political alliances.
Kalonzo held that the approach will be key in enabling the opposition to face President Ruto.
“While Ruto is consolidating and pushing for all to wind up and join UDA, our approach should be the other way around. We should open the space so that as many parties as are willing can join this wonderful winning team. There should be no room for division. Let’s not allow ourselves to be divided,” Kalonzo said.
The tone for the probable political alliances for 2027 was set on Saturday, January 25, 2025, in Kirinyanga when Rigathi Gachagua and Martha Karua made a political truce during the former DP’s visit to her Kimunye home.
